Tecido Veludo o Ano Inteiro? Sim!

Velvet Fabric All Year Round? Yes!

Mariana Rodrigues

Velvet is texture, it is depth, and above all, it is a style statement – whether you are sewing a structured jacket or a strappy top for a summer night.

This article explores tips for sewing velvet fabric and some bold ideas for pieces to sew with this fabric.

How to sew velvet without panicking?

Velvet has a reputation for being "temperamental" because it slips on the machine, but the secret is in the preparation:

  • The nap direction: Before cutting, run your hand over it. The "direction" where the fabric feels smooth is the side that should face down on the piece.
  • Pins (lots of them!): Since the fibers tend to slide over each other, don’t skimp on pins (or use sewing clips).
  • The right needle: Use a new needle, preferably size 80 or 90, to avoid pulling threads.
  • Tecidos Vivos tip: Never iron directly on the nap side! Use steam or iron on the reverse side with a fluffy towel underneath to avoid crushing the shine (or the fabric!).

Velvet in Summer? Absolutely yes!!

If you think velvet is heavy, try sewing an XL scrunchie, a shiny tote bag, a bikini or swimsuit, or even some high-waisted shorts. Our velvet has the perfect drape so you don’t feel like you’re wearing an old curtain.

If you prefer home decor pieces, cushion covers with contrasting textures are also a must. Tip: Mix velvet with linens for a modern look.

In the “Beautiful Pieces” highlight on Tecidos Vivos’ Instagram, you’ll find many beautiful pieces to inspire you! Including some examples of swimwear and summer pieces sewn with our amazing velvet!

Lose the Fear and Take the Risk!

Velvet fabric is not a material for rushed sewing, but for projects where quality is sought. By following these steps, from careful cutting with the nap direction to using steam, you ensure the final result has that unmatched professional finish.

At Tecidos Vivos, we choose patterns that highlight precisely that natural movement of the shine, so every piece you make is unique. If you have any questions about the best fabric for your specific project, we are here to help. 🩷
